I grew up in the beautiful Northern Neck of Virginia just ouside the town of Reedville. One grandfather was a waterman who crabbed and later piloted menhaden fishing boats. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. My other grandfather established a family electrical business along with my father and uncle, called Bray Brothers. My father worked there and later for himself repairing everything from television sets to radar and sonar on menhaden boats and police communications equipment. He is a World War II veteran, having fought with the Marines at Iwo Jima. My mother raised me and my brother and has published poetry in Ideals magazine.
I received a B.A., with distinction at the University of Vrginia in 1974 and taught for a year at Staunton Military Academy before attending law school. I received my Juris Doctor from William and Mary in 1979. That's where I met my wife, Virginia Perry. We have one daughter who completed law school at the University of Richmond in 2008.
I worked as an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for Petersburg immediately upon passing the bar exam. Then I left for the City of Richmond where I prosecuted criminal cases under Aubry Davis as an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for almost ten years. I then returned to prosecute in Petersburg until 1997, leaving that office as Chief Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney. I proscuted there first under the late Sidney Barney in 1979, followed by (now) Judge James Hume and later Cassandra Burns.
In 1997 I went into the private practice of law with my wife, Virginia Perry as part of Perry & Bray where I continued to practice mainly criminal law. She now maintains her practice emphasising family and divorce law with Perry Law Group, PC.
In 2005 the citizens of Colonial Heights elected me as their Commonwealth's Attorney, a position I am privileged to hold today. I teach courses in the paralegal and criminal justice programs at Bryant & Stratton College (formerly Commonwealth College) where I have instructed for more than ten yeras.
I have been one of only a few prosecutors in Virginia to obtain a life sentence for a drug dealer. While in private practice I also was co-counsel on a wrongful death case that brought a jury verdict of 1.3 million dollars, one of the top jury awards in Virginia that year. In 2003 I was awarded the Congressional Order of Merit by the National Republican Congressional Committee and was selected as Businessman of the Year by the Business Advisory Council of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
I am delighted to serve the City of Colonial Heights as Commonwealth's Attorney and can think of no greater honor than to continue fighting for justice in this community.
